Nomads Hostel review- Byron Bay

The Wi-Fi is crap, but at least it’s free. The dorms are spacious (even 8 bed rooms), so plenty of room to site your bags and still have space to walk, sit and talk- wow! The first floor has an open air deck with hammocks, Jacuzzis, and benches allowing guest to eat, lay around, or get wet. They also have a large games room with pool table, and a TV room with an Xbox console. Even the kitchen is a good size for everyone to make a mess all at the same time. The location is spitting distance from the beach, and right amongst shops and eateries. Its never noisy at night though, so can’t complain on that front.

They do have a TV room where “movie nights” take place. Whilst I was there, the Xbox was experiencing technical difficulties playing the badly scratched rented DVDs so it was all a bit of a cop out really. It could also be down to user error as well, of course? Up to a point, I do give the management some credit as they do try to arrange group activities for the guest, even if they don’t always go to plan. During my stay, they did a pub-style quiz with ridiculously easy questions, and a “cheap” barbecue on the open deck area.

The people I met there were friendly enough, usually a 50/50 mix of English and German guests, plus a few other nationalities. There is an in-house travel desk directly in front as you walk through the main entrance. The staff there can do reasonable package deals on Fraser Island and Whitsunday trips, plus there is Nimbin village (which I did) an hour or so drive from the hostel. Based on my experiences, travellers probably are better booking their trips here during stay, rather than give their dosh to one of the predators in the tour shops down the road!

The hostel is only a short walk from the greyhound bus stop. There is usually a staff member with a billboard ready to escort you round the corner every time a bus is due in. The Aldi supermarket is a minute’s walk away too. Its in a comfortable location, and serves its purpose. What more could you want? Oh, and its boiling outside as soon as you exit the building’s air conditioning!
